The definition of cancer – should it be changed?

As reported by The Age 30 July – 'A group of experts advising the US's premier cancer research institution has recommended changing the very definition of cancer and eliminating the word entirely from some common diagnoses... '

The opinion piece 'Over-diagnosis and over-treatment in cancer' in the most recent edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association calls for a review of the definition of cancer. The publication suggests that many lesions detected during breast, prostate, thyroid, lung and other cancer screenings shouldn't be called cancer at all and an alternative definition should be provided.
