Getting away from daily challenges and spending quality time with loved ones is a great way to relax and recharge. If you're affected by cancer and the financial strain that often comes with it, it can be difficult to afford a holiday at a time when it's needed most.
Cancer Council Victoria's Holiday Break Program can provide you with a one-off short getaway, at no cost.
This program can provide:
- quality time with loved ones, creating lasting memories
- a break from hospital visits and cancer treatment
- rest and relaxation
- the reassurance that, if the need was to arise, you won't be too far away from hospital.
Cancer Council Victoria matches eligible patients and their families with available, donated accommodation. All properties are within Victoria to minimise travel time.
Holiday breaks are usually for 2-4 nights. Various type of properties are available in different locations. Whether you're after wheelchair access or a dog-friendly back yard, we'll work with you to help you find the right spot for your break.
The Holiday Break Program is open to people undergoing cancer treatment, or who are within 18 months of completion of treatment, their close family and carers. Cancer Council Victoria prefers that patients are accompanied by a friend, family member or carer who is capable of helping with the care of the patient and who can secure assistance in a medical emergency.
It's important that you are able to organise transport prior to booking a break away. Cancer Council Victoria does not provide travel assistance. Due to the various locations of our properties, public transport may not always be an option.
All bookings are subject to availability. Breaks usually take place Monday to Friday and on occasional weekends, during March - October. Blackout times for bookings include school holidays, public holidays and peak season (December to February). Bookings can be made up to three months in advance and at least two weeks’ notice is preferred.
To book a holiday break, please call 13 11 20 (9am – 5pm Monday to Friday). If you're eligible, they will provide you with an application form. Forms must be completed and signed by a health professional to certify you are well enough to travel, then submitted via email to firstname.lastname@example.org or fax to 9514 6750.
