Grants available for cancer information centres in regional health services

Cancer Council Victoria is a beneficiary of Dry July Foundation funding to establish or refurbish three cancer information spaces in regional Victoria. We are seeking organisational partners through an expression of interest application, to work with us to better meet the information needs of people affected by cancer. Applications close 30 June 2018.

Clinical Consultation Skills Retreat

Registrations are now open for the Clinical Consultation Skills Retreat to be held on 5-8 August at RACV Torquay Resort. Following the successful inaugural meeting in 2017, this annual retreat focuses on developing core skills to support person-centred care. Delivered in a format accepted internationally as the ‘gold standard’ in communication skills training, this program is open to multidisciplinary oncology clinicians.

Raising awareness of supportive care in cancer

The Cancer Nursing Research Group at the University of Melbourne, and the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services are carrying out a study to develop relevant and useful supportive care resources. The project is seeking the expertise and voice of clinicians involved in cancer care.

Patient stories to assist participation in cancer clinical trials

To raise awareness and support patients in their decision to pursue treatment on cancer clinical trials, Cancer Council Victoria has launched four patient experience videos. These may help normalise clinical trial participation for patients by looking into the lived experiences of others. Videos are available on the Victorian Cancer Trials Link website.

The latest statistics for cancer in Victoria released

New cancer data has been released by the Victorian Cancer Registry as part of its publication Cancer in Victoria: Statistics and Trends 2016. The report reveals how lung cancer mortality rates have overtaken those of breast cancer, making it the current leading cause of cancer death in both men and women.

Research profile: Increased awareness and use of Optimal Care Pathways by General Practices

The Optimal Care Pathways (OCPs) have been developed to improve patient outcomes by facilitating consistent, safe, high quality and evidence-based care. Cancer Council Victoria have trialled a model of education outreach visits to GP practices in the North Western Melbourne region to support the adoption of the OCP recommendations into primary care.
