Cancer Council Victoria has launched an ambitious new campaign to lift bowel cancer screening rates in Victoria. We are calling on all health professionals to lend their voice by encouraging their patients to do the test when it arrives at their home as part of the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program.

Cancer Council Victoria and Deakin University’s Centre for Organisational Change in Person-Centred Healthcare are partnering to deliver this state-of-the-art event at the luxury RACV resort, Torquay, 9-11 October 2017. Accepted internationally as the ‘gold standard’ in communication skills training, this evidence-based program is open to oncology clinicians.

eLearning: Survivorship and late complications of childhood and adolescent cancer

The Paediatric Integrated Cancer Service has developed a series of eight eLearning modules for health professionals, covering a range of topics related to survivorship and late complications of childhood cancer. The modules are intended to support health professionals in the community, as survivor’s transition from tertiary services back to their general practitioner or community service.

Victorian Cancer Trials Link relaunches improved website

Clinical trials are a gold standard treatment option, yet many people find the decision to participate a challenging one. Of those newly diagnosed with cancer in Victoria, only 6% are recruited into clinical trials. To increase patient access to and information about clinical trials, Cancer Council Victoria has recently improved the Victorian Cancer Trials Link website.

Introducing Trial Connect: A peer support program

To assist people in their decision making around clinical trial participation, Cancer Information and Support Service is introducing a new pilot program, Trial Connect. Based on the successful Cancer Connect model, Trial Connect provides patients the opportunity to talk with a trained volunteer who ‘has been there before’.

Moderate drinking increases risk of breast cancer recurrence

Drinking as little as six grams of alcohol a day – less than one standard drink – has been shown to be associated with a modest increase in risk for women who have had breast cancer, particularly post-menopausal women. These findings from a recent systematic review are the first step in a larger body of work aiming to improve health messaging for people affected by cancer.

Exploring palliative care enquiries to 13 11 20

Cancer Council Victoria’s Information and Support line is staffed by experienced oncology nurses who are there to help with any questions about cancer. Around 10% of these calls relate to palliative care, prognosis, recurrence and death and dying, topics that are often difficult to deal with amongst family and friends.
