NEWS: Victoria’s new Medical Treatment Planning and Decisions Act 2016 commenced this week on 12 March 2018. This will bring about some key changes to how medical decisions are made for people who do not have capacity to make their own decisions. The new legislation applies to all registered health practitioners and paramedics.

Integrating patient referral to information and support in a hospital setting

Clinician referral to cancer information and support services can influence patient uptake and enhance ability to initiate self-care and maintain quality of life. A recent study using a prescription pad style of routine referral to cancer information and support services showed a positive impact on patients’ behaviour to seek support. This demonstrates how Cancer Councils can be used as an adjunct to supportive care provided in the clinical setting.
