Run by Services Australia, the Financial Information Service helps individuals make informed decisions about their finances. The service aims to help people understand their own financial affairs and options, financial planners and how to use their advice, how to use credit sensibly, how to save and plan for the future through investing, what happens in the transition into aged care, and how to plan for retirement. It also aims to increase confidence with financial matters including investment, salary sacrifice and superannuation. It is accessible via a phone call, video chat or in-person appointment. The service is not staffed by financial planners or counsellors, and therefore cannot sell or give advice, prepare financial plans or tax returns, recommend investments, advise on investing money, buy investment products, make decisions about pensions or recommend financial advisers.Any personal information provided is confidential, and may be used to adjust the rate of an individual's Centrelink payment, if information given shows that the rate is incorrect. The service also includes an extensive range of online information about diverse financial matters.
