Lung cancer - research funded

Lung cancer is a malignant tumour in the tissue of one or both of the lungs. Some people have primary cancer that started in the lungs. Others have cancer that started somewhere else in the body and spread to the lungs (secondary cancer or metastasis).

Incidence

About 2680 people are diagnosed with lung cancer in Victoria each year.

Research funded

More than $1.8 million has been given to fund research specifically into lung cancer.

In addition, more than $16.2 million has been spent on research projects looking into the detection and treatment of all tumour types.

Overall, Cancer Council Victoria has funded $69 million worth of lab-based research in Victorian hospitals, universities and research institutions since 2003.
