In Victoria more than 10,000 cancers each year could be prevented through improved diet and increased exercise alone, according to research on future projections released today in the Medical Journal of Australia.

Research from VicHealth and Turning Point Alcohol and Drug Centre shows young people and males are at greater risk of alcohol-related assaults on Saturdays and on St Patrick's Day. This has prompted the Alcohol Policy Coalition to today call for tighter restrictions on alcohol promotion in the lead up to St Patrick's Day this Saturday.

Cancer in Victoria: Statistics and Trends 2010, an annual report produced by the Victorian Cancer Registry, shows that while the number of cancer diagnoses is projected to increase in the next three years, five-year cancer survival has increased from 47% to a record high of 64% in the period from 1985 to 2009.
