Our self-report survey for monitoring trends in sun protection behaviours over time is potentially subject to social desirability in responses, especially as sun protection becomes more normative.
In this research study, we are comparing self-reported trends in sun protection with those from our Sun Observation Survey, for concurrent weekend dates. Our preliminary analyses suggest there has been no evidence of divergence over time between self-reported and observed trends in mean body exposure.
If this is so, it gives confidence in the validity of both methods, and suggests a real improvement in the population's sun protection over time has occurred.
