Cancer Council is the largest not-for-profit funder of cancer research in Victoria.
We are offering studentships to Victorian undergraduate biomedical, basic science and medical students (who have not yet completed their final year) to work on Victorian cancer research projects during the summer period to stimulate interest in cancer research in Victoria.

Available funding
Up to 10 studentships are available in 2026, each valued at maximum $3,000 over a 30-working day period (i.e., 6 weeks) over the summer university vacation period. The funding provides a stipend to students to offset cost-of-living expenses while undertaking the studentship.
Eligibility
We invite applications from biomedical, basic science and medical undergraduate students enrolled at any Victorian university. Students must identify a suitable research project or cancer program at a university, health service or research organisation.
Application and assessment process
Assessment and selection are via a one-stage, competitive process. Final funding decisions are made at the discretion of Cancer Council and will take into account the assessment committee’s funding recommendations and availability of grant funds.
Selection criteria
All applications are assessed against the criteria described below:
- Criterion 1 Quality of the research project The project is related to cancer research and there is scope for a student to support the project
- Criterion 2 Research career development The potential to support the student’s interest in cancer research
- Criterion 3 Student’s academic achievements The student’s potential to work in cancer research, as demonstrated by strong academic achievements.
