Seen a suspicious fundraiser?

 The Cancer Council Victoria does not participate in the following fundraising activities:

  • Door-to-door sales
  • Face-to-face street sales (commonly known as chuggers).

The Cancer Council also does not endorse or participate in tin shakes, except when express permission has been granted for special days via a formal approval process.

Identifying genuine Cancer Council fundraisers

Cancer Council fundraisers can be identified by:

  • A badge including their name, the Cancer Council logo, expiry date and statement that they are an unpaid volunteer
  • A letter of authority including their name, Cancer Council logo, expiry date, Cancer Council authority signature and a confirmation of their location or type of fundraising activity

Reporting suspicious fundraising activity

If you are concerned a fundraiser may not be registered with the Cancer Council or another charity, you may wish to report them to Consumer Affairs Victoria (who are the regulatory body) or to the local police.  Consumer Affairs can be contacted on 1300 55 81 81. 

We also suggest that you do not respond to anyone who you think is suspicious. Charity fundraisers should always carry proper identification.

Information to look for when reporting suspicious fundraising activity

If you become aware of a suspicious fundraising activity, find out as much information as you can. Questions you may be asked include:

  • What was the fundraising activity?
  • What did the fundraiser look like?
  • Where was the fundraiser operating?
  • When did you see the fundraiser?
  • Is this the only time you've seen the fundraiser?
  • What made you suspicious?
  • Did the fundraiser have any identification?

You may also be asked to supply your contact details so that further information can be gathered if necessary.
