Artist's Statement

After the recent passing of my Mum, I reverted to a child-like disinterest in the 'real' world. Sorting through her belongings, I re-discovered some of my childhood books and adventured into a different time, transcending the sadness and emerging into a world of enchantment. The narrative of the fairytales held a truth I was able to comprehend. They are, afterall, a guide to the future with the promise that we will live 'happily-ever-after'.

Judge's Comments

by Jane Scott, Director Monash Gallery of Art

Deborah White has captured in this portrait the spirit of adventure, facing adversity, holding strong and having a good laugh at yourself. This work was borne following the death of her mother. Whilst sorting out her mother's belongings, Deborah discovered her childhood storybooks that her mother had kept, reminding the artist of an innocent joyous time-shared. The objects we hold dear, that trigger fond memories about momenta's occasions, times past, special friends and family are to be cherished and celebrated as often as our hearts can stand.
