Adjusting to sexual and intimate changes after cancer will be the focus of a free Cancer Council forum to be held in Melbourne on Wednesday October 29.
At least 40 per cent of people experience sexual dysfunction after cancer, and for some cancers including breast and prostate, the rate is much higher.
This free forum for people with cancer and their partners will focus on a broad range of intimacy issues and discuss ways to stay sexually confident regardless of partnership status.
Cancer Council Helpline Deputy Director, Dr Amanda Hordern said that with intervention, up to 70% of patients can improve sexual functioning and confidence.
"Almost all cancer treatments have the potential to alter sexual function,'' Dr Hordern said.
"People can feel less sexual because they look different or feel less attractive after treatment.
"This forum informs people about ways to cope with sexuality and cancer issues so they can increase sexual confidence and enhance quality-of-life," Dr Hordern said.
