2008 Under 11 Children’s Writing Outstanding Entry

Remembering my Opa and Pa

When I was little Pa used to push me on the swings
But now that he's gone I can still remember him

When I was little Opa used to give piggyback rides
But now that he is gone I can still remember him

When I was little Pa used to point out little insects!
But now that he's gone I can still remember him

When I was little Opa used to push me around in the wheel burrow
But now that he's gone I can still remember him

They are gone but I will never forget them

This is a wonderful little picture book. Children's writers strive for effective repetition, and it has been achieved brilliantly on each page of this book. ‘I can still remember him' is a lovely recurring phrase. I also loved the way tiny details of Opa and Pa's lives are captured, both with words and illustrations. Sensational effort!
