The story of Superman

I know what I'm going to be when I'm older. Ive always known but I just wasn't sure which team Id be playing for. Last night I watched Melbourne Victory win the A League Soccer and it became very clear when I saw my favourite player, Archie Thompson win the match for the team. I've been playing soccer for 6 years and as a goalie, Im pretty good. People tell me Im "a natural" partly because my Dad was a really good goalie, but I know I have to build up the muscles in my upper, right arm to the best I  can be.

When I was 6 years old, my Mum found a lump under my arm and she took me to the doctor to find out what it was. It turned out it was Fibrosacoma. I didn't know what that meant, I didn't even know what was going on but I do know it kept me in hospital for a long time. Ive had a few operations since then to remove different parts of me that had the cancer.

Some kids at school asked me what the scars were from. I wasn't ready to tell them the truth so I created this great story about being attacked by a shark at the beach house. Most of my friends believed me. I guess we were a lot younger then. In those days, I used to believe in a lot of stuff - the boogieman or that I was actually the son of Superman and that cancer couldn't get the son of Superman.

But it did and now I don't pretend that my scars are from a shark bite. I don't have to because I tell people what Im going through and theyre usually very supportive. This  year, I showed my teachers Freddy Andrew Hosea - that's what Ive nicknamed my main scar. I figured I had to call it something besides "may scar" so I chose a name so that I could really show it off. The "Hosea bit" is after my Grandpa because that's his first name and I love him a lot and wanted a piece of him with me always.

Anyway, I showed my teacher Freddy Andrew Hosea and I could tell she was impressed. She reckons it's the best scar shes seen and she should know because she described her brothers scar (not from cancer) and I thought that sounded pretty extraordinary.

This is my last year of primary school and Im excited about all the new adventures ahead of me. I've already had many challenges in my life and I'm sure there will be many more to come. The first thing I'm going to do is build up my muscles so that I can make it onto the Melbourne Victory team one day as their goalie. One thing I know for sure is that looking at Freddy Andrew Hosea daily reminds me that I can do anything I want to. Forget the son of Superman - I am Superman.

Judge's Comments

Nicholas Lopez: This story of a personal battle with Fibrosacoma is funny, inspiring and an altogether beautiful piece of writing. The idea of naming your cancer scar Freddy Andrew Hosea after your grandfather is brilliantly quirky. The Superman thread helps keep the story on track. Outstanding work!
