Frequently asked questions about donations
How do I make a donation?
There are many ways you can make a donation. We take donations online, over the phone, and in cash. Now that you're here, the easiest way is to use the form at the top of this page.
Where does my money go?
Your donation will go to supporting Cancer Council Victoria's mission towards a cancer-free future.
-
Cancer research and clinical trials
-
Prevention of cancer through lifestyle education
-
Education about cancer and cancer treatment
-
Support for people diagnosed with cancer and their loved ones
Our mission is to eradicate all cancer. We cannot guarantee that your donation will go directly to ovarian cancer research, for example. Your donation also does not go to Cancer Council Australia, which is a separate organisation. Instead, it will go to local initiatives and support services in Victoria.
Will I receive a tax receipt?
Yes, you'll receive a tax receipt on any donation over $2. This will allow you to claim your donation come tax time. Most donations to charity offer the same benefit.
You can use the tax receipt for your donation to claim a deduction at tax time through the Australian Tax Office's online portal. If you have a personal income tax agent, they can submit the deduction on your behalf.
How do I support through regular giving?
If you're looking to do more than donate on a special occasion, you can! Becoming a regular giver is the single most impactful way you can help people diagnosed with cancer. Regular Giving contributes hundreds of thousands of dollars per year.
You can become a regular giver here. You can also get involved in other ways, like fundraising, volunteering, or leaving a gift in memory.
What donations are tax deductible?
Most charitable donations over $2 to registered not for profit organisations are tax deductible. For a tax donation to be deductible, it must be made to a deductible gift recipient (DGR). The gift must also be made with no exchange to the donor. Raffle tickets cannot be tax deductible for this reason, as the donor stands to gain from the exchange. Not all charities can support tax-deductible EOFY donations as deductible gift recipients. You can check with a quick ABN lookup.
How do tax deductible donations work?
EOFY charity donations are a great way to save on your tax return. Come the end of financial year. You can claim donations as a deduction of your taxable income. You’ll get a lower recorded taxable income, and will receive a tax deduction scaled with how much you earn.
Why are donations tax deductible?
The Australian Government supports donations made to certain charities. The incentive to the donor is that every donation over $2 lets them pay less tax for the year, or get a better tax refund.
You can use the tax receipt for your donation to claim a deduction at tax time through the Australian Tax Office's online portal. If you have a personal income tax agent, they can submit the deduction on your behalf.
Why are tax deductible donations so important?
We urgently need to fund important research that will enable scientists to develop more effective ways of detecting, diagnosing and treating cancer.
By finding and treating cancer early, we can help Victorians survive this deadly disease.
Your support before 30 June will enable our researchers to see this vital research through to its conclusion.
Thank you.
