Right now, world-class scientists here in Victoria are undertaking pioneering research projects that are searching for new and more effective ways of detecting, diagnosing and treating cancer.
Dr. Saya is working hard to develop a simple test that examines people’s DNA to find out if they’re at increased risk of developing one of the ‘big four’ cancers.
“The vast majority of cancers are picked up after somebody develops symptoms,” Dr. Saya explains.
A simple test could help Victorians get the early cancer diagnosis that can save their lives…
“If we can find those who are at increased risk, we can potentially detect these cancers with screening before symptoms develop – meaning we have the best chance of treatment and cure.”
Half of all cancer deaths in Australia are caused by just four types of cancer. These are melanoma, breast cancer, bowel cancer and prostate cancer.
The big 4 cancers affect too many people. It’s likely that, at some point in our lives, most of us will know someone diagnosed with one of these cancers.
Dr Saya’s research, and so many more research projects like it, are only possible thanks to your kind support.
