Lead researcher

Melanie Wakefield, Sarah Durkin, Emily Brennan and external collaborators

Years funded
2001 to present

This program of research has involved clipping newspaper articles on tobacco issues since 2001 from the top 12 Australian daily newspapers and coding them for placement, topic and tone.

This database of newspaper articles has permitted analysis of letters to the editor on tobacco issues, comparison of news in Australia versus United States and trends over time in news coverage on tobacco control issues in Australia.

These measures of news coverage are currently being relation to adult smoking behaviour as part of an NHMRC project grant.
