The formation and functions of white blood cells are controlled by special chemical messengers (cytokines) that bind to the surface of blood cells. Over-responses or incorrect responses to cytokine instructions leads to leukaemia development. At present we are analysing how cells respond to their instructions and the chemicals inside the cell that determine whether the cells will respond abnormally.
