Research into the prevention, causes and treatment of bone cancer in adolescents and adults. Osteosarcoma is the most common bone tumour in the young. Our research focuses on developing more effective and less toxic means of treating osteosarcoma. We have recently found PEDF, a protein that blocks blood vessel formation, in areas where osteosarcoma cells cannot grow. We propose to study the effects of PEDF in normal bone and on tumour growth within the bone environment. Suppressing the tumour's ability to make new blood vessels should restrict its growth and prevent it from invading other organs.
