A randomised trial of regional lymph node radiation in women with early breast cancer

Lead researcher

Associate Professor Boon Chua (Vic), Professor David Joseph (WA), Dr Jennifer Harvey (Qld) & Dr Verity Ahern (NSW)

Years funded
2006

The objective of this study is to determine if radiation to the draining lymph nodes, in addition to the breast, improves the survival of women with breast cancer treated by breast conserving surgery and systemic therapy. Patients are randomised to receive either the standard breast radiation, or breast plus lymph node radiation. As lymph node radiation may cause more side effects, this study also aims to determine whether there are differences in the toxicity, cosmetic outcome and quality of life associated with the two treatment approaches.
