Collaborating with research colleagues across Australia, we led the first two national surveys of sun-protection behaviours of adults and adolescents in the summers of 2003/04 and 2006/07.
These surveys have shown that adolescents have poorer sun protection practices than adults and are therefore more likely to be sunburned. Parent sun protection behaviours are positively associated with children's sun protection. Over time, there has been some improvement in adult sun protection behaviour and in adolescent attitudes, coincident with a national skin cancer prevention media campaign. A third survey is planned for the summer of 2010/11.
