Professor Helen Dixon has an extensive track record in health psychology and health communication research, with 30 years’ experience in behavioural research focused on cancer prevention and public health. Her work examines public responses to health promotion campaigns and health relevant mass communications, with particular emphasis on the influence of commercial advertising and product packaging for food and beverages. This work includes population surveys and experimental studies assessing consumer responses to public health campaigns, nutrition labelling interventions, and commercial product marketing. As Principal Research Fellow at the Centre for Behavioural Research in Cancer, Cancer Council Victoria, Helen leads a multidisciplinary team of researchers, including five with PhDs. She is also an Honorary Professorial Fellow in the Melbourne School of Psychological Sciences at the University of Melbourne, where she earlier completed her BA(Hons) in 1994 (first class honours), and PhD in in 2003 (NHMRC Scholarship). Helen has pioneered research on counter advertising strategies to mitigate the impact of unhealthy food marketing and has extended this work to examine the effects of alcohol and junk food sponsorship in sport. Her research has informed the design, evaluation, and refinement of major public health interventions and policy relevant initiatives, including the LiveLighter® campaign and food labelling regulation. Helen works closely with Cancer Council Victoria’s Prevention Division and the Food for Health Alliance, and serves on Cancer Council Australia’s Nutrition, Alcohol and Physical Activity Committee.
