New Medical Decision Making Laws

The McCabe Centre for Law and Cancer and Cancer Council Victoria are hosting a webinar to help you understand how the new Medical Treatment Planning and Decisions Act 2016 affects planning your preferences, wishes and values about health care decisions. The webinar will provide an overview of the Act, and key changes relating to advance care directives and decision-making for people who can no longer make their own decisions.
Register for the webinar

The introduction of the Act changes medical treatment decision making and advance care planning. It provides new binding instructional directives and new value directives for people to express preferences, wishes and values to guide other people if making future medical treatment decisions for them. It also requires the consideration of a person's own preferences, wishes and values when they cannot communicate or make their own decisions.

Speakers include Claire McNamara, Legal Officer with the Office of the Public Advocate and the McCabe Centre's senior legal policy advisor Sondra Davoren and legal policy advisor Dr Deborah Lawson.

Decision making about treatment can be difficult at any time, but particularly approaching end of life. Can you help enhance community knowledge of the law at the end of life? Cancer Council Victoria is researching how people affected by cancer and their carers make decisions about end of life care. We're looking to interview adults affected by cancer and carers of adults affected by cancer who are involved in medical decision-making. Find out more on how to get involved.
