Sandy Anderson - Order of Australia Medal (OAM)
Sandy began work with Cancer Council in 1999 and over the last 21 years has contributed significantly within her role as nurse consultant. She provides considered advice on the role of nurse cervical screening providers, ensuring they are well supported to reach women who are most at risk of cervical cancer.
Sandy goes above and beyond, tirelessly providing mentorship and support to the hundreds of nurses who have contacted her for support and advice – most times outside work hours and within her own time. She is also recognised as an expert nurse cervical screening provider, most particularly working with the Victorian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community, and as such, is frequently called on to join state or national committees, ensuring their needs are well represented. It is largely due to her passion and dedication that Victoria now has a significant number (500+) of nurse cervical screening providers, all who are contributing to Victoria having one of the lowest cervical cancer mortality rates in the world.
Sandy’s advocacy efforts can’t go unnoticed – her passion for ensuring cervical screening needs are met within inclusive and sensitive practice has led us to developing innovative campaigns such as “Lesbians Need Pap tests too” and our recent campaign that was inclusive of transgender men.
Professor Andrew Roberts – Member of the Order of Australia (AM)
Our former Director and Chair of the Board, Professor Roberts, a blood cancer researcher and haematologist, has been appointed Member of the Order of Australia. The award recognises Professor Roberts’ contributions to advancing the understanding and treatment of blood cancers, and service to haematology and cancer organisations. In particular, he was instrumental in work at the Walter and Eliza hall Institute (WEHI) revealing how cancer cells stay alive. This knowledge was leveraged to develop a new class of anti-cancer drugs, which includes a medicine that in clinical use around the world for treating patients with certain forms of leukaemia.
Professor Roberts is joint leader of the WEHI’s Cancer Research and Treatments theme, a clinical haematologist at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, the Haematology Lead for Research and Education at the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre and the Metcalf Chair of Leukaemia Research at the University of Melbourne. Professor Roberts is also a member of our Medical & Scientific Committee, and for about a decade, was chair of this committee.
Professor Ingrid Winship – Officer of the Order of Australia (AO)
Professor Ingrid Winship was recognised for her service to the medical community with the title of Officer of the Order of Australia (AO). She received the medal for distinguished service to medicine, particularly to clinical genetics and research, to cancer prevention, and as a role model and mentor.
The Director of the Royal Melbourne Hospital’s Genomic Medicine, Professor Winship is also the inaugural Chair of Adult Clinical Genetics at the University of Melbourne and the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Her contributions include the launch of the health service’s Clinical Trials Research Centre; the establishment of the Melbourne Genomics Health Alliance; and programs to increase engagement for women in research.
Professor Winship is a practising clinician, providing academic and clinical leadership in the inherited cancer clinics. She served on a number of high-level committees within Australia, and internationally; she is currently a director ofnthe boards of the Australasian College of Dermatologists, the Australian Genome Research Facility and Global Variome, and a member of the Health Research Strategy External Advisory Group for New Zealand. She is Chair of the Australian Health Ethics Committee and a member of the National Health and Medical Research Council.
Professor Winship has been the recipient of funding from Cancer Council Victoria and has collaborated on several projects with our own researchers, including Professor Graham Giles.
