Food for Health Alliance is advocating for policy reforms to improve diets and prevent obesity in Australia, with a strong focus on children’s health.
The new campaign will accelerate progress towards a health levy on sugary drinks in Australia, which has been introduced in over 120 countries around the world.
Housed at Cancer Council Victoria, Food for Health Alliance is a partnership between Cancer Council Victoria, VicHealth, Healthway, and Deakin University, that advocates for laws and policies to improve our food environment.

Research from the Grattan Institute shows a levy could lead to lasting reductions in type 2 diabetes, dental decay, and premature deaths, delivering significant public health benefits. High levels of sugar intake can lead to people being above a healthy weight, which can increase the risk of 13 types of cancer.
This work is made possible thanks to philanthropic support from The Balnaves Foundation, whose investment is helping drive meaningful policy change to protect the health of future generations.
“A levy on sugary drinks is a smart, evidence-based step toward creating a healthier future for the next generation. We’re proud to stand alongside Food for Health Alliance in driving change that will benefit families across Australia,” said Hamish Balnaves, CEO of The Balnaves Foundation.
