Cancer Council Victoria’s method for identifying and funding research projects is an open, competitive method. Through our grants program, requests for funding are received by researchers across all sectors – universities, hospitals and across all cancer types. It is then reviewed by an Independent Research Award Committee, made up of scientists, oncologists and people with lived experience who score all applications against strict selection criteria including research excellence.
This helps Cancer Council Victoria empower the best of the best research across all cancer types, and all institutions.
Once the committee completes its discussion and scoring, it provides Cancer Council Victoria with funding recommendations. The Cancer Council Victoria Chief Executive Officer ratifies the recommendation.
Our process doesn’t stop once projects are funded. We’ve established monitoring systems to ensure research funds are being used as intended and milestones are being met. For each funded project we have a funding agreement that sets out the reporting deadlines and conditions of their funding. One of the conditions is that Cancer Council Victoria only releases the next scheduled grant payment if it is satisfied that a project is on track and funds are being used as intended. Cancer Council Victoria utilises the skills of members of the Research Award Committee to review each project’s progress report. At the end of the funding period, researchers provide Cancer Council Victoria with an in-depth report on a project’s achievements and outcomes.
