It’s hard to fathom that 1999 was a quarter-century ago—a year that brought us unforgettable moments in entertainment and incredible community spirit. This was the year James Cameron's epic film Titanic captivated audiences worldwide, and Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone soared to the top of the New York Times bestseller list.
This same year, in the heart of Murrumbeena, a new tradition began as the first-ever Victorian Relay for Life kicked off at Duncan Mackinnon Athletics Track.
Held on March 26 and 27, the inaugural event drew 37 spirited teams and raised an impressive $60,000 for cancer research. Attendees were treated to a vibrant array of jazz and rock performances, creating an electrifying atmosphere over the 24-hour celebration. A poignant candlelight ceremony, honouring loved ones lost to cancer, became a cherished part of the event, a tradition that continues to inspire and unite the community today.

While Fran wasn’t involved in the first Victorian Relay for Life, she has been involved in her local Warrnambool relay for over 20 years.
“My reasons for participating have varied throughout the years. The first year it was about joining our workplace team, but I’ve continued to go back each year for friends, family members and work colleagues who have all been affected by cancer.”

Part of the organising committee for many years, Fran held the position of chair for over 10 years. “Some of my fondest memories of the event include the candlelight ceremony, that’s always something special. I also loved the early morning trackside conversations with people when only a few people were out on the track, and everything was quiet.”
“It’s a great opportunity to get a team together and raise money for a wonderful cause,” said Fran. “Everyone's reasons and motivations for going are different. You’re in a space with like-minded people who all have that common goal, to be proactive to help change the outcomes for people with cancer.”
“So many teams have been going for so long, we have a relay family, it’s lovely to catch up with people that we might only see at the event once a year.”
With 17 Relay for Life events still held across Victoria each year, run by local community committees and school groups we give thanks to all of the incredible people who have kept the spirit of Relay going for so long, and for making a meaningful difference in their communities. Bringing together survivors, carers and those fighting back against cancer, these events are truly impactful.
