The Victorian Rehabilitation Centre is a leading rehabilitation hospital with over 40 years experience. Its Oncology Program is designed for those with a primary diagnosis of cancer. The program can help patients and their family address the physical and psychological needs which may accompany a diagnosis of cancer or as a result of the treatment required.It aims to develop strategies for fatigue and pain management; provide a network with other people also affected by cancer; improve cardiovascular fitness, strength and endurance; improve the capacity to return to work, sport or leisure pursuits; and improve self-esteem and overall quality of life, including strategies to assist in the performance of everyday tasks. The program incorporates both exercise and education to ensure patients have the knowledge and confidence to manage their own health and facilitate a smooth transition back to a more normal lifestyle.The oncology team consists of a rehabilitation specialist, exercise physiologist, dietitian, occupational therapist, social worker and psychologist.The day consists of a tailored one hour exercise session and a one hour education session on topics including goal setting, relaxation, nutrition, social connections, energy conservation, exercise during and after treatment, stress management, exercise benefits and fatigue management.
