The Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) Safety Net is an Australian government program that can reduce your costs if you spend a lot on PBS medicines. It helps you pay less for medicines after you have reached a certain amount in a calendar year, called the threshold. You can reach the threshold by buying PBS medicines and Repatriation Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (RPBS) medicines at community pharmacies, private hospitals approved to supply PBS medicines, and out-patient pharmacies at public hospitals. You can use your PBS Safety Net card whenever you get a prescription filled. When you show your PBS Safety Net card, you will get PBS medicine either for free if you are a concession card holder or for up to $6.80 if you are a general patient. You can also reach the threshold sooner by combining what everyone in your family spends on PBS medicines. Applications for the PBS Safety Net can be made online through Services Australia.
