Health Living after Cancer boosts health

Thursday 13 April, 2017

Healthy Living after CancerThe results of a new study suggest that people who participate in our free phone-based Healthy Living after Cancer program see positive changes to their diet and physical health. So far, we have found that participants increased their physical activity along with intake of fruits and vegetables and on average have decreased their body mass index.

To date, the results from 131 participants in our free phone-based Health Living after Cancer program show a range of positive changes to their diet and physical health.

People who have taken part in this six-month program showed:

  • A significant increase in physical activity from 208 minutes per week to 341 minutes per week.
  • A significant increase in daily serves of vegetables from 3.2 to 4.3, and an increase in daily serve of fruit from 1.8 to 2.2.
  • An average decrease in BMI from 28.55kg/m2 to 27.61kg/m2.

In our Healthy Living After Cancer program, a cancer nurse works with you over the phone to make healthy lifestyle changes through goal setting, support, tips and motivation. You can be part of the program if you're over 18 and have completed your treatment for non-metastatic cancer.

"The part of the program that sold me was the idea of someone calling me; as having that continual support post treatment just meant the world to me. I still had appointments with my surgeon and oncologist but it was amazing to have a call from a friendly voice passing on ideas about nutrition, exercise, relaxation and just that overall chat about how you were feeling helped so much." - Josephine, 58, diagnosed with breast cancer.
