Keeping breast cancer survivors active

Thursday 16 February, 2017

ACTIVATE TrialTrying to get active after completing treatment for breast cancer? The ACTIVATE Trial at Cancer Council Victoria is looking at a new way to help breast cancer survivors become more active using wearable fitness technologies. Take part in this exciting new project and adopt a healthier lifestyle.

The benefits of a physically active lifestyle are well known, especially after a breast cancer diagnosis. Many people use the start of a year to set goals for more regular activity in their lives. This project is a great way to get started and participants can receive a Garmin Vivofit2® fitness device to assist with their exercise goals.

Dr Brigid Lynch, Cancer Council Victoria researcher, believes that the rise of wearable technologies, such as Apple watches, Fitbits and Garmin devices, may help people get active.

"Wearable devices provide real-time feedback that helps to motivate and improve the efforts of individuals to achieve their goals," says Dr Lynch. "These devices can be used almost anywhere and we are trialling to see if these devices assist in creating lasting behavioural change".

The ACTIVATE Trial will assess over a 12 week period any changes in physical activity and amount of time spent sitting. Recruitment is currently underway for women who have been diagnosed with stage I to III postmenopausal breast cancer, have completed their primary treatment and can visit Cancer Council Victoria at 615 St Kilda Road, Melbourne, on one occasion.
