Publication profile: Understanding Bowel Cancer

Monday 14 August, 2017

The book has been prepared to help people understand more about bowel cancer. It explores treatment options for early and advanced cancer and how to cope with the changes bowel cancer and the treatment may bring. It also explains the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program for those over 50. The booklet does not need to be read from cover to cover - just read the parts useful to you.

The following chapters are included in this booklet:

  • Key questions. Page 70 provides a terrific checklist for questions to ask your doctor about bowel cancer and treatment.
  • Making treatment decisions
  • Treatment for early bowel cancer. On page 52 you will find ‘Paul's story' where he shares his personal experience going through a colostomy.
  • Looking after yourself
  • Seeking support
  • Caring for someone with cancer

This booklet answers important questions you may have such as ‘what are the risk factors?' and ‘can bowel cancer run in the family?' and will empower you to make informed decisions from treatment to seeking support.

The booklet was developed with help from a range of health professionals and people affected by bowel cancer. It is available to order on our website and can also be downloaded.
