There is often a question around what a support group can offer to those affected by cancer. Like the name suggests, it is used when a group of people who have something in common come together regularly in a confidential and safe place. It allows people to give and receive support, share ideas and thoughts, develop friendships and feel less isolated.
The Wimmera Prostate Cancer Support Group started last year after an information session held at Horsham RSL. They now meet once a month and welcomes men with prostate cancer, their carers or family.
The group was also successful in receiving a Cancer Council Victoria grant to hold a stall at the Wimmera Field Days (photo). They used the occasion to raise awareness about prostate cancer, cancer prevention and to promote men’s health in their local community. The other 2017 Cancer Support Group grant recipients include:
- Sunraysia Young Women’s Cancer Support Group who will run a wellness program for women with any cancer
- Chinese Cancer Society of Victoria to host a woodwork program called ‘Busy Fingers, Fun with Wood program’
- Breast Friends Cancer Support Group who will hold ‘Boob Club on Tour’ events to meet up and offer support to younger women with cancer.
