Research a tribute to a great man’s life

Monday 6 September, 2021

After a life lived in dedication to others, Charles Campbell Coghlan OAM continues to make an incredible contribution to the world through the gift left in his Will.

Charles Campbell Coghlan OAM lived a life in dedication to his community.

Born in Ballarat in 1925, Charles attended school while developing his farming skills on the family property. He took on running the property in his late teens after his father died and soon began producing fine merino wool and beef cattle.

It wasn’t long until Charles was directing his dedication to the whole community, primarily through his lifelong passion of horseracing. For decades he was not only a committee member but also president of both Burrumbeet Park and Windermere Racing Club and The Ballarat Turf Club, likely setting a world record for service to a community-based not-for-profit club while doing so. His work even earned him an Order of Australia Medal in 1998.

Charles Campbell Coghlan’s tireless and selfless work throughout many aspects of his life drew the adoration of his peers. Charles positively affected many throughout his life and had a vision for improving the health and lives of future generations – a vision he is helping make a reality through a gift in his Will.

This gift has helped establish the Charles Campbell Coghlan OAM Cancer Breakthrough Fund, intended to fund research into cancer prevention, detection, treatment and care.

No matter how big or small, gifts like Charles Campbell Coghlan’s can make such a significant impact for people affected by cancer – and Charles’ family say it is no surprise he chose to make an impact in this way.

“To all who knew him, Charles was a true gentleman,” say his nieces Kate, Marie and Carmel. “To us, he was fun-loving Uncle Pip, supportive, kind and generous.

“We are extremely proud of the legacy Charles has left to charity. To have a number of medical research projects bear his name is something we will always treasure.

“How wonderful that his generosity will impact the lives of many through medical research.”
