It's National Carers Week 16-22 October, a time to celebrate and recognise the 2.8 million Australians looking after family members and friends who have a disability, mental illness, chronic condition, terminal illness or are older people with care needs.
Last year, our cancer information and support team had around 3118 connections with family members and friends providing support to someone with cancer. National Carers Week is the perfect opportunity for Cancer Council Victoria to recognise the enormous contribution family and friends make by hosting a free webinar on Tuesday 18 October from 7pm.
Looking after someone with cancer can be challenging, but also rewarding. Many people are balancing this valuable role with other demands such as work, family or study and it's common to feel unprepared and unsure of where to go for information and support.
Our free webinar will cover:
- common experiences when looking after someone with cancer
- how to look after your own needs
- where to find reliable information and practical support
Mr Hamish Park - will share his experience about supporting his father through cancer
Dr Carrie Lethborg - Social Worker with expertise supporting families
Dr Anna Ugalde - Research Fellow focusing on models of supportive care
Ms Caroline Mulcahy - CEO Carers Victoria, the peak agency for unpaid, mostly family carers.
