Cancer Information and Support ServiceWorld Cancer Day on 4 February was a time to reflect how everyone - as a collective or as individuals - can do their part to reduce the global burden of cancer. The Cancer Information and Support Service team work together with partners across Victoria to help support those affected by cancer.

A cancer diagnosis change lives. It can be difficult to make sense of what the cancer means and how to find answers or solutions to the many concerns that arise. Cancer Council Victoria's Cancer Information and Support Service helps to empower patients, their families and friends with reliable information, emotional and practical support to help them manage their health and wellbeing.

Our experienced and understanding cancer nurses are available to anyone affected by cancer; if you have cancer, have had it in the past, or have concerns about your cancer risk. The support provided is complementary to the information received from the treating team and can increase your confidence in getting the most out of the healthcare system.

In 2016, our nurses responded to over 10,600 calls and emails, tailoring the information and support provided to fit the individual's circumstances. This included access to information, linking with emotion, practical or financial support services and peer support from others who have been through a similar experience. In the same year, access to our web-based information increased by 15% with a 65% increase in downloaded resources.

Most importantly, support is available to all Victorians no matter of geographical location or cancer diagnosis.
