Message from our CEO

Cancer Council Victoria CEO Todd Harper

In May, more than 7,300 generous supporters gathered their loved ones, workmates and communities together and hosted an Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea. I have really enjoyed hearing stories from hosts like Brigitte and would like to personally thank everyone who took part. So far you have raised more than $3 million to fund our important work in cancer research, prevention and support.

Empowering people to reduce their cancer risk is a passion of mine – because one third of all cancers can be prevented. In the last Breakthrough Bulletin I talked about our commitment to increase the number of Victorians taking part in the free National Bowel Screening program.

Thanks to a generous donation from the Hynam family, who shared our vision, we were able to launch a campaign in July to increase participation in this life-saving program. Now we need you to help us spread the word and urge friends and family to do the home test. Just by improving participation rates by 10 per cent, we could save thousands of Victorian lives.

Also, thanks to you, we’ve been able to continue to recruit people into the Australian Breakthrough Cancer Study, which is investigating the causes of cancer and other diseases. If you’re 40-74 years of age and have never had cancer, visit abcstudy.com.au to find out how you can participate.

In this edition: we bust some myths around sun protection to help protect you and your loved ones this summer, look at expert versus public opinion on healthy foods, and share with you the results of a new study into breast cancer risk for women.

I hope this edition gives you the information you need to reduce your cancer risk, makes you aware of the many services available for people with cancer, and lets you know how much of a difference you’re making and how much we truly appreciate your loyal support.
