Health Living after Cancer boosts health

Thursday 13 April, 2017

Healthy Living after CancerBenefits to diet and physical health have been observed in a study of over 100 cancer survivors participating in our free phone-based Healthy Living after Cancer program. Participant behaviour changed to include an increase in physical activity along with intake of fruits and vegetables, an average decrease in BMI and better quality of life.

The results of 131 participants completing the personalised, free, phone-based six-month Healthy Living after Cancer program highlight the diet and physical health benefits.

  • significant decrease in BMI from 28.55kg/m2 to 27.61kg/m2
  • significant increase in physical activity from 208 minutes per week to 341 minutes per week
  • significant increase in daily serves of vegetables from 3.2 to 4.3, and an increase in daily serves of fruit from 1.8 to 2.2
  • significant increase in physical health quality of life
  • significant decrease in cancer- and treatment-related symptoms and side-effects.

This is an NHMRC partnership project led by The University of Queensland in collaboration with Cancer Council's located in NSW, SA, WA and Victoria, and is designed for adults who have completed treatment for non-metastatic cancer with curative intent. In Victoria, the program is delivered by our 13 11 20 oncology nurses who made 414 coaching calls in 2016. Each nurse works with survivors to help them make healthy lifestyle changes through goal setting, support, tips and motivation.

If you have patients who may benefit from this personalised diet and exercise program, please encourage them to register online or call 13 11 20.
