Reducing travel costs for patients

Thursday 19 March, 2020

In 2019, we spoke to more than 600 Victorians. You told us that a lack of support for transport and parking at cancer treatment centres was a major concern. That concern prompted our submission to the Parliament of Victoria’s 2020 Inquiry into Expanding Melbourne’s Free Tram Zone.

Our recommendations

  • We support expanding the free tram zone to all major public hospitals, not just the extensions proposed by the inquiry (which would reach just the Royal Melbourne, Royal Women’s, Royal Children’s and Alfred hospitals).
  • We support removing fares for Seniors Card holders on public transport.
  • We support the use of new technologies that enable alternative forms of payment rather than having to rely on a Myki card. We do not support dynamic public transport pricing that could see public transport fares go up for people affected by cancer.
  • In addition, we ask the Victorian government to review the Victorian Patient Transport Assistance Scheme every two years to deal with inequities and to expand the eligibility criteria.
