Daffodil Day 2009 - Mum, I don't know how to tell you...

Transcript: My name is Anne Lindell, and I volunteer on Daffodil Day to raise awareness, and funds to fight cancer.

My grand daughter Morgyn was diagnosed with cancer in 2005 at the age of 2.

Morgyn went into the Royal Children's hospital for what we had hoped would be a fairly routine procedure. However, it turned out to be devastating news.

My daughter looked at me and she just said, in a very clear voice. ‘Mum, I don't know how to tell you this, but Morgyn's got cancer'.

Morgyn was admitted and basically they do the staging tests and that was just horrific, and I've often thought, how do you tell a 2 year old that this is good for them?

She had so many procedures performed in that first week that the strongest of people would have gone under. And that little girl battled through it as well as she could. And again her mother was just amazing with her positivity and her being there, but I can't begin to tell you just how hard that was.

Morgyn had absolutely no concept - all this poor little girl knew was that all these big people kept coming at her wanting to prick her fingers, wanting to put gas masks on her face, wanting to put things in her arms. Nothing was nice for that little girl.

The official treatment - the chemotherapy probably went for 6 months and then there were a lot of follow up tests for the next 6 months. And now she gets followed up about every 6 months at the moment.

But it still causes a lot of anxiety and makes things very difficult and when you have a little one who'll wake up some mornings and say "It's ok mummy, I'll be brave." And you know it's going to hurt. As Morgan herself said, it's the waiting that makes it hard.

On Daffodil Day I really hope we raise lots and lots of money for a wonderful cause. So when you see a volunteer like me, on Friday the 28th of August please buy a daffodil for Daffodil Day.

Background visual: Like Morgyn, one in two Australians will be diagnosed with cancer by age 85. August 28th 2009, Daffodil Day.
