We are aware that the Federal Government and Opposition have today committed their intention to conduct an Inquiry to investigate cancer incidence on the Bellarine Peninsula in response to public concern that the number of cancer cases in the area could indicate a potential cancer cluster.
“Cancer cluster” describes an area in which there are concerns about the number of cancers occurring in a group of people thought to be at risk of a common exposure – be it where they live, where they work or some other usually long-term exposure to an agent that has brought about the cancer.
In Australia, potential cancer cluster investigations are usually conducted by public health authorities through the Department of Health.
If called upon, we would welcome working with the next Australian government, and any other agencies, to investigate further.
We understand how difficult issues like this can be for the community and that some may feel concerned following this announcement. We encourage anyone worried about cancer to call Cancer Council Victoria’s information and support line 13 11 20 to speak to one of our experienced cancer nurses who are available to provide information and access to support services.
