Providing a creative voice for Australians touched by cancer, Cancer Council Victoria is proud to bring its inspiring Arts Awards to Meeniyan from 10 November to 25 November 2009.

The free public exhibition will be held at the Meeniyan Art Gallery, 84 Whitelaw Street, Meeniyan, and will include an artistic creation by Meeniyan residents, Renae Louise and Claire Manuell.

Claire Manuell’s written piece titled “The Night Before” was commended in the Short Story category and will be on display at the Meeniyan exhibition. Ms Manuel will also speak about her moving story during the opening ceremony of the exhibition.

Renae Louise’s moving piece titled “Conceptual Cells” was selected for exhibition in the Visual Arts category in this year’s awards.

The 2009 Arts Awards theme 'Embrace' inspired hundreds of Australian artists to embrace the opportunity to share their cancer experience creatively through visual art, poetry and prose, film, Indigenous art, and children’s artworks.

Cancer Council spokesperson, Irene Manitta, said the Arts Awards Exhibition brought together the most outstanding artworks in a powerful and moving display.

“All the artists in this year’s exhibition convey their cancer story with incredible honesty, warmth and courage. By sharing their experience through creative expression, they have a unique opportunity to remember loved ones, help others understand and provide a sense of hope for those affected by cancer,” Ms Manitta said.

An official opening of the Meeniyan Arts Awards Exhibition will be held on Tuesday 10 November from 6pm-8pm at the Meeniyan Art Gallery. All are welcome to attend. Free to the public, the Meeniyan exhibition then runs until 25 November.
