Locals get behind a Relay good cause

Thursday 19 March, 2009

Registrations for the 2009 Mildura Relay For Life are on track to beat last year's attendance, which attracted 1,000 locals for the overnight relay style event.

Already over 800 people have registered to attend this year's event at Ornamental Lakes Park on 28 and 29 March, which is up from the same time last year.

Cancer Council's Relay For Life State Manager, Anthony Keogh said the show of support from the community was fantastic.

"This is a great effort, and with just over a week to go, plus the large number of people who register on the day, it looks as though we'll beat last year's numbers.

"By taking part people are making a real difference to those within the community who are facing cancer," Mr Keogh said.

Cancer Council figures show that around 250 people in the Rural City of Mildura are diagnosed with cancer each year with bowel, prostrate and breast cancer being the most common.

Mr Keogh said the survival rates for many common cancers had increased by more than 30 per cent in the past twenty years. He said that fundraising events, including the Mildura Relay For Life, enabled the Cancer Council to continue working towards improving survival rates by allowing the organisation to continue investing in cancer research, education and support.

"Funds raised through the Mildura Relay For Life also go towards a number of important services, such as the Cancer Council Helpline and Cancer Connect. There services support people facing cancer, both locally and across the broader community.

"Last year, around 640 people from the Rural City of Mildura used the Cancer Council Helpline, which provides free information and support for anyone affected by cancer," Mr Keogh said.

The 2009 Mildura Relay For Life is an overnight event where teams of 10 or more keep a baton moving in a relay style walk or run to raise funds. It's an opportunity for the local community to celebrate survivors, remember loved ones lost and continue the fight against cancer.
