Last chance to get creative with cancer arts awards

Wednesday 11 March, 2009

Entries to the 2009 Cancer Council Victoria Arts Awards are closing soon and local artists are encouraged to get creative before it's too late.

Artists of all abilities, from the most established through to amateur creators, have until Friday 3 April to submit their entries to the Arts Awards, which provide people with the opportunity to share their cancer experiences through creative expression. Entrants may have faced cancer themselves, supported a family member or friend, or experienced cancer in some other way - anyone with a cancer story to share is eligible.

There are 7 categories:

  1. Visual Art,
  2. Short Story,
  3. Film,
  4. Poetry,
  5. Indigenous Art,
  6. Children's Writing and
  7. Children's Art.

All works should reflect the theme, ‘Embrace'.

Cancer Council spokesperson Irene Manitta encouraged those intending to enter to start their work immediately, if they hadn't already.

"This is our last call for entries and we encourage all who have been touched by cancer to consider entering," Ms Manitta said.

"The Arts Awards are a great opportunity for people to express their experience creatively and to connect with others across the country who have faced a similar journey," she said.

The Arts Awards are open to Australians of all abilities. Outstanding entries are selected by professional artists and experts, and cash prizes will be awarded to the outstanding entry in each category.

Winners will be advised in mid May, and following the judging, selected works will be displayed at the Cancer Council Victoria Arts Awards Exhibition. The exhibition runs from 20 July to 7 August in the foyer of 120 Collins St Melbourne. It will then tour regional galleries in Kyneton, Shepparton and Meeniyan to raise awareness of the many ways cancer impacts the community.

The Cancer Council urges anyone touched by cancer to embrace this last opportunity to share their cancer experience and to help educate, raise awareness and provide a sense of understanding for those effected by cancer.

For an entry form or for further information call 1300 65 65 85, email or visit our arts awards website.
