Cause for a Cuppa

Cancer Council Victoria is urging all Victorians to take time for a tea this May and help save lives by taking part in Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea.

Now celebrating its 16th year, Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is a perennial favourite of Victorians as it’s a fun and easy way to catch up with friends, family, colleagues and neighbours whilst also joining in the fight against cancer.

Cancer Council Victoria spokesperson, Marlene Cirillo, says that this year the Cancer Council expects that 500,000 Victorians will raise more than $2 million for the cancer fight by attending or hosting an Australia's Biggest Morning Tea.

“One Australian every 5 minutes is diagnosed with cancer, around the length of an average coffee break, with Victoria having more than 24,000 residents diagnosed each year. It is startling figures such as these that inspire so many Victorians to embrace this event and use their morning tea break to help in the fight against cancer, “ Ms Cirillo said.

“Since it first began in 1994, Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea events across Australia have raised over $60 million. We are hoping to reach a record breaking $11 million Australia wide this year to fund life-saving cancer research and education programs to help prevent cancer and support programs for people in times of great need,“ she said.

Organising your morning tea is as easy as making a cuppa. You don’t have to be dressed to a tea and it can be as small as sharing a tea break with your work colleagues or as big as a community fete. All you have to do is set a date for your morning tea any time in May or beyond, register as a host, and then invite your friends. In return, your guests make a donation to the Cancer Council.

So make sure it’s tea for two, or more, this May and help raise money to fund life-saving cancer research, education programs to help prevent cancer and support programs for people in times of great need.
