Cancer Council Victoria and the local Relay For Life Volunteer Organising Committee today announced the postponement of the Baw Baw Relay For Life event.
Initially scheduled to take place on 14 and 15 March, the event will now be held in Baw Baw in March of 2010. "Postponing an event is never an easy decision," Relay For Life State Manager Anthony Keogh said. "However, we support the local organising committee's decision to postpone the event to allow Baw Baw residents to focus their immediate efforts on the bushfire appeal.
"We know that many people in our Relay For Life community have been personally impacted by the recent bushfires, so you can understand why local residents feel a current need to redirect their energies. This community has shown incredible generosity in raising funds for the Cancer Council, so I'm sure the local bushfire fundraising will be just as successful," he said.
Since 2004 teams of Baw Baw locals have come together at Relay For Life events, taking turns to walk through the night to raise funds for the Cancer Council. The event has raised more than $324,000, with every dollar raised supporting world-class cancer research, education and support programs.
"Some of the funds raised in this community have helped to support our Financial Assistance Program, which provides small grants to people facing financial hardships as a result of a cancer diagnosis," Mr Keogh said. "I'm sure that these grants will be all the more important now that some people facing cancer are also facing additional financial burdens as a result of the fires.
"If you know someone who could benefit from this program, or other practical or emotional support during a cancer journey, please urge them to contact the Cancer Council Helpline on 13 11 20," he said.
Mr Keogh said that the money raised by Relay For Life teams to date will be put toward their 2010 fundraising totals and teams are encouraged to bank their Relay funds now. As soon as funds are banked, every dollar will begin playing an important role in supporting Cancer Council programs like the Financial Assistance Program.
