Free forum in Mildura: When Cancer Won't Go Away

Tuesday 30 September, 2008

Learning how to live well while facing the uncertainty of advanced cancer will be the focus of a Cancer Council forum to be held in Mildura on Saturday 18 October.

The free forum for people whose cancer has advanced and their family and friends covers topics such as living with uncertainty, treatment and supportive care, and finance and legal issues.

Advanced cancer is a cancer that won't go away and is unlikely to be cured. However, treatment can keep some advanced cancers under control for months or years, and can help to control symptoms such as pain.

Tina Thomas from the Cancer Council's Cancer Information and Support Service said the program covered both emotional and practical information, support and advice to patients and their families.

"When people are facing a really challenging illness and end of life, they go through a great deal of distress and anxiety,'' Ms Thomas said.

"The When Cancer Won't Go Away Forum informs people with advanced cancer and their families of ways to communicate with each other and coping strategies. It also looks at the formalities such as making sure you have a legal will and that finances are in order."

Ms Thomas said the Forum provided an opportunity for people with advanced cancer and their families to speak to others in a similar situation.

"People often tell us that it's helpful to talk to someone facing similar issues," Ms Thomas said.

"By sharing experiences, participants can feel less isolated and better adjust to the changes in their life."
