Support needed for vital cancer research

Tuesday 20 May, 2008

With The Cancer Council Victoria currently able to fund only 1 in 5 research funding applications received, we're calling on generous Victorians to dig deep to help us increase the number of promising projects we can support each year.

Research is one of the most effective tools we have to fight cancer and almost $1.2 million is needed by 30 June to remain on target for the $3.6 million needed to fund upcoming projects.

"With 1 in 2 Victorians diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85, I urge all Victorians who can contribute to this appeal to do so," Director of Community Relations and Fundraising Deb Stringer said.

"The appeal will allow us to meet our cancer research funding goals for 2008 without risking the funding of our important education and support programs," Ms Stringer said.

Medical research has an enormous impact on prevention, detection and treatment of cancer, and has played a key role in increasing cancer survival rates to 61%.

"With added support from our generous supporters, we hope to increase the number of projects to allow us to take yet another step forward in the fight against cancer," Ms Stinger said.
