Sports clubs fight back

Thursday 5 June, 2008

Victorian sportsmen of all levels are urged to band together with their mates this July to tackle their toughest opponent yet - cancer. With 36 Victorian men hearing the words ‘you have cancer' daily, The Cancer Council Victoria is calling on sportsmen to fight back against cancer by joining forces in Call To Arms.

Cancer Council spokesperson, Jenna Mellerick, said Call To Arms was a great opportunity for all sports players to support men with cancer, while playing a game they loved.

"With so many Australian men facing a cancer diagnosis, chances are it will either be you or your best mate that hears the words ‘you have cancer'. By joining Call To Arms, you can help fight back and raise funds and awareness for men facing cancer," Ms Mellerick said.

Joining Call To Arms is easy. Clubs simply register to receive their Call To Arms Kit, then ask players to wear a yellow armband on a nominated match day and make a donation to raise funds. Clubs are also encouraged to undertake other fundraising efforts in support of the campaign, with all funds raised helping prevent, detect and treat cancers in men, as well as supporting men in great need.

"We're hoping all Victorian sports clubs will get involved - even professional clubs like Essendon Football Club are supporting the campaign. We urge you to register your club today too," Ms Mellerick said.
